Success carries you into rooms your parents didn't work in. Rooms where the vocabulary is French cuffs and Italian collars, and the assumption is that anything of yours worth knowing was left at the door. Akar is the shirt you wear into those rooms without leaving anything behind. Malay cloth, cut modern, printed by hand in Kuala Lumpur. Roots first — always — then the shoot.

The cloth
A living tradition from Terengganu — the copper stamp, the pot of dye, the length of cotton lawn — carried into the boardroom without translation.
Cap batik begins with a workshop table in Terengganu — a length of cotton lawn stretched flat, a brass stamp warmed on a pan, and a pot of dye a family has kept for generations. The stamp is pressed by hand, thousands of times per shirt. No two panels repeat exactly.
The blue on the collar in front of you comes from bunga telang — the butterfly pea flower that grows on every kampung fence. The purple comes from mangosteen skin, iron-mordanted. Both were here long before we were, and both take a full day of soaking to hold.
What we do to a Malaysian cloth is respect it. Cut it for a modern shoulder. Set an Italian collar and a French cuff on it. Send it into the room the way it wants to arrive.

The makers
Every shirt passes through a workshop, a stamp, a length of dye. We'd like you to meet them properly.
A house is only ever as considered as the people making its work. At launch we will introduce the artisans, the workshops, and the families whose lineages carry Akar's cloth — in full, with names, in their own workshops, on their own terms. Until then, we would rather say nothing than say a version.
